Darel Carey is a spatial person… and a special one. That’s what his Instagram account says, and there’s no better description of his work. Carey is a visual artist focused on optical and spatial perception, his art includes immersive tape installations, painted murals, and digital art; he uses lines to shape and bend the perceived dimensions of a surface or space.
A line to the naked eye is just that, simple; but when combined with many others in a consistent and precise manner, they become more than just lines; together they form a perceived illusion of curvature and depth. For Carey, this creation is analogous to how the natural world works; he explains that his approach follows a natural process that manifests emergent properties similar to those found in nature, such as complex moving bodies emerging from groups of cells, or non-physical consciousness emerging from the physical brain.
The strong connection between his art and the patterns of nature is clear, and he feels that the best imagination is a mix between understanding reality and inspiration from science.
The artist combines his interest in visual aesthetics with his interest in science and philosophy. He studied language, biology and psychology, and served 11 years as an analyst in the Air Force. Throughout his life he has ventured into many creative fields, from graffiti to portrait drawing, tattoos, photography, logo creation and T-shirt designs. Carey has plenty to talk about, but it is his art that he likes to have the greatest impact on, and that is how he wants to leave his mark and be part of this world.
